New Year, New Me

The world isn’t ending yet

but I don’t save the candles anymore,

just in case. I wake with the sunrise,

which is 5 am, even in winter.

I stopped biting the skin around my fingernails

and started eating loose almonds, kale chips.

I’m just protecting my energy.

I’m starting a new cleanse; detoxifying;

fixing the parts of me that have been tainted

by the world — which isn’t ending yet.

I still have time for that new skin care routine,

to start walking 10 thousand steps

each and every new day, and maybe

this year I will finally take to heart

that advice about the best time to plant a tree.

The world isn’t ending yet,

but I have to start tomorrow, just in case.
